How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

Because we largely worked remotely during the pandemic, we had some difficulty meeting fundraiser goals and had to learn to work creatively at how we fundraised. All staff were remote so we met via zoom on important matters each week and did 1:1 meetings where appropriate. We were successful at getting some covid related grants to bridge the funding gap.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Most of our work was done through email, mail and text since we could not meet 1:1. We had to be selective in the emotional support programs to ensure that our clientele felt safe.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We will continue to meet virtually with families who need help who feel they do not want to meet in person. In addition, we are partnering with another nonprofit to provide financial coaching and navigation for families who need it who cannot meet in person but can work with professionals remotely.

Method for Attributing Outcomes

We don't know if the observed changes were caused by the nonprofit's program or something else happening at the same time (e.g., a participant got a raise). To determine causation, we take the outcomes we observe and subtract an estimate of the outcomes that would have happened even without the program (i.e., counterfactual outcomes).


We estimate the dollar amount of financial assistance attributable to the nonprofit by comparing the financial assistance given by the nonprofit to the financial assistance that would have been provided in the absence of the nonprofit (the "counterfactual"). In this case, we estimate the counterfactual to be zero based on two assumptions. First, we assume there is functionally no upper limit to the amount of cash transfers that continue to be valuable to patients as they are far from reaching the point of diminishing marginal returns, such that aid provided by one nonprofit does not displace aid provided by another. Second, we assume that nonprofits work independently and do not coordinate the provision of aid to the same patient. As a result, all aid provided by the nonprofit to patients with medical conditions can be directly attributable to the nonprofit.

Briefly describe a recent change that your organization made in response to feedback from the people you serve.

Angels Among Us has made many changes as a result of feedback we have received from constituents and stakeholders in the last 18 months. As part of our strategic planning, Angels Among Us changed our financial assistance program in 2019. After reviewing our program and looking at the types of cancer we see and comparing it to treatment plans, we moved from a standard length of time per family to utilizing our financial support by the planned length of treatment. That meant that those families who didn't require our services for a long period of time could roll off earlier and those that needed it for a greater amount of time could be accommodated. While the amount of support per month remained the same, length of time changed.

Like the overall Encompass Rating System, the Culture & Community Beacon is designed to evolve as metrics are developed and ready for integration. Our partnership with Feedback Labs and Candid, and other partners including Fund for Shared Insight, GlobalGiving, and Keystone Accountability, enables us to launch the first version of this beacon with Constituent Feedback information collected on Candid's site.


Feedback practices have been shown to support better Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion outcomes, an essential area of assessment that we intend to further expand and develop in the future.
